How to use Google Search Console: What the metrics mean

· PION

Understand clicks, impressions, CTR, and average position; compare Queries and Pages totals; and find indexing, sitemap, and AI Overview data in Search Console.

When you connect a site to Google Search Console and log in, four numbers appear on the Overview screen: clicks, impressions, CTR, and average position. Korean searches use variants that translate as Search Console, Google Search Console, and Google Console Search, all referring to the same screen. Registration walkthroughs cover up to ownership verification but leave out the meaning of these four numbers and the reason the totals of the two tabs don't match.

PION uses the Performance report to measure search traffic for its blog and client sites. When the two tabs disagree, we check the figures against Google's help documentation. Below, we explain what each metric counts and which data to use when the totals differ. For how to connect Google Search Console, how to register a homepage in Google Search Console, and the indexing request procedure, see Google search registration and verification: What to check if the site still does not appear.

1. The Overview screen and when data first appears

The Overview screen shows summary cards for Performance and Indexing, and for a newly connected site it can take up to a week for data to appear. PION skips past the Overview cards and first checks the Queries tab of the Performance report. When you log in to the Google Search Console site (search.google.com/search-console) and select a property, the Overview appears first. The About Search Console data Help page states, "It can take up to a week to generate data for a new site or for a site newly added to Search Console." Even if the cards are empty, that does not mean the connection is broken.

According to Performance report overview and default settings, "The report's default view shows your site's click and impression data from Google Search results over the past 3 months." You change the date range and search type in the top filters, and the dimension in the tabs above the table.

2. Definitions of clicks, impressions, CTR, and average position

All four metrics are counted based on the Google Search results screen, and impressions for ordinary search results increase regardless of whether the user scrolled down to that position.

Metric Help definition (original) What to watch when reading it
Clicks "The number of times a user clicked your site in Google Search results" Even if two links are clicked in the same search, it counts as one at the property level
Impressions "The number of times your site appeared in Google Search results" Ordinary results are counted even before scrolling. Carousels are counted only when the item appears on screen
CTR "Clicks divided by impressions" The fewer the impressions, the more the value fluctuates
Average position "The average position of your site's topmost result among the search results" Even if several of our pages appear, only the topmost one is counted

Impressions also include searches that no human entered. Rows where sentence-style queries ending in a question mark repeat every day with similar impressions are often automated searches inserted by tools that track AI answers. PION separates out these rows first and counts only short-form queries as human demand.

3. Why the totals of the Queries tab and the Pages tab don't match

The Queries tab aggregates at the property level, and the Pages tab at the URL level. Add to that the table's 1,000-row limit and anonymized queries, and it's normal for the two totals not to match. If three pages from our site appear side by side in one search, the Queries tab counts one impression with the position of the topmost one, while the Pages tab counts three, once for each URL. The basis is in the Help pages Dimensions and data grouping and Troubleshoot data discrepancies.

Reason for the discrepancy Help explanation (original)
Property vs. page aggregation "Graph data is always aggregated by property, regardless of the dimension you select"
Table row limit "The table can display up to 1,000 rows, so low-frequency long-tail rows may be omitted from the table but are still included in the chart totals"
Anonymized queries "Anonymized (rare) results are omitted from the table but are included in the chart totals unless a query filter is applied"

Export both tabs for the same period and compare them to identify which of the three reasons explains the difference.

Step What to do Value to note
1 In Performance (Search results), set the date range to the last 3 months and the search type to Web, then export the Queries tab Number of query rows, total impressions and clicks
2 Split the downloaded table into sentence-style rows ending with a question mark or the Korean interrogative ending meaning "is it?" and rows of two or three words, and sum each separately Sentence-style total, short-form total
3 Export the Pages tab under the same conditions and sum it Pages total
4 Record the difference between the query total and the chart total as the anonymized-query share if the row count in step 1 is under 1,000, or as a value mixed with the row limit if it's 1,000. Record the difference between the pages total and the chart total as property vs. page aggregation The difference and its reason

If the impressions of sentence-style rows are similar to or larger than those of short-form rows, the impressions graph differs from human search demand. When reporting results, PION separately aggregates impressions with tracking-bot queries removed.

4. Where to find indexing and sitemap reports

A single page is under URL Inspection, the whole site is under the Pages report below Indexing, and submitted sitemaps are under the Sitemaps report in the same menu. The Google Search Console index screens are these three places.

What to check Menu location Value shown on screen
Whether a single page is indexed URL Inspection in the top search bar or the left menu Whether it's indexed by Google, the last crawl date and time, and the canonical URL Google chose
Indexing status for the whole site The Pages report under Indexing Number of indexed pages, and counts by reason for non-indexing
Search Console sitemap The Sitemaps report under Indexing List of submitted files, status, and number of discovered URLs

The About Search Console data Help page explains that most reports are based on a sample of representative URLs, but "the Page indexing report and the Video pages report are exceptions. These reports let you see comprehensive totals." The Dimensions and data grouping Help page notes that most performance data is assigned to the canonical URL and states, "You can use the URL Inspection tool to find a page's canonical URL." If the Pages tab shows only a variant address instead of our article's address, the performance has been aggregated to that canonical address, so compare it against the canonical URL field in URL Inspection.

5. Which AI search data appears in Search Console?

Google's AI Overview and AI Mode impressions are aggregated into the Performance report but cannot be broken out separately, and citations in ChatGPT and Perplexity answers appear on no Search Console screen. PION uses a question set to record answers that Search Console does not capture, and keeps those results in the same table. AI features and your website (updated December 31, 2025) states, "Sites shown in AI features (e.g., AI Overviews, AI Mode) are included in Search Console's overall search traffic." There is no AI Overview item in the search-type filter, nor in the search appearance type table of the dimensions Help page. The AI Mode item in the What are impressions, position, and clicks? Help page states, "When a user asks a follow-up question in AI Mode, it is the same as performing a search for a new question," so follow-up questions are captured as separate queries.

OpenAI's Overview of OpenAI Crawlers explains that "OAI-SearchBot is used to surface websites in search results in ChatGPT’s search features," and Perplexity's Perplexity Crawlers describes PerplexityBot for the same purpose. Even if these two bots cite our article, it is not recorded in Search Console. Instead of Search Console, follow the steps in 5 Ways to Check Whether Your Brand Appears in ChatGPT Answers to enter the same question directly into ChatGPT and record the sources, or count referral visits from chatgpt.com and perplexity.ai in GA4.

These are the limits of the data available in Search Console. Other AI answers are covered in our GEO Agency Service Guide. To check Google indexing and AI search bot access, start with the 8 items in the 5-Minute GEO Readiness Assessment.

Frequently asked questions

How do you use Google Search Console?

Log in to the Google Search Console site (search.google.com/search-console), open the Performance report in the left menu, and view clicks, impressions, CTR, and average position by switching between the Queries tab and the Pages tab. The default view is the last 3 months of Web search results; whether a single page is indexed is in URL Inspection, and the whole site is in the Pages report under the Indexing menu. PION adds AI referral visits from GA4 to the same table for aggregation.

When checking Google Search Console, is it an error if the Queries tab total and the Pages tab total differ?

It is not an error. The Queries tab aggregates at the property level and the Pages tab at the URL level, so if several pages appear in the same search, the Pages tab's impressions are larger. The table displays only up to 1,000 rows and anonymized queries are excluded from the table, so the sum of the table comes out smaller than the chart total.

Where do you check the Search Console sitemap and index status?

Under Indexing in the left menu are the Pages report and the Sitemaps report. The Pages report shows the number of indexed pages and counts by reason for non-indexing, and the Sitemaps report shows the status of submitted files and the number of discovered URLs. To look up just a single page, enter the address into URL Inspection in the top search bar.

When is Search Console data updated?

Per Google Help, collected data is usually posted within 2-3 days, and the most recent date (usually today, sometimes yesterday) is preliminary data whose value changes a few hours later. For a newly connected site, it takes up to a week for data to appear. Daily values are based on Pacific Standard Time, so they can be off by one day from GA4's daily values.

Does Search Console show when ChatGPT cites our article?

No, you can't. Search Console aggregates only Google Search results, and Google's AI Overview and AI Mode impressions come aggregated into the Web search type. To learn about citations in ChatGPT or Perplexity answers, you have to enter the same question directly and record the sources, or count referral visits from chatgpt.com in GA4.
