AI answer visibility basics check

Answer 8 questions to get a check score and up to 3 things to start this week. No sign-up needed.

01 Recording AI answers now

1 We have asked ChatGPT or Gemini questions about our category.
Why it matters

Without a record of which brands appear in AI answers, you will have no baseline to compare against 3 months from now.

To do
Enter 5 questions your customers might ask into ChatGPT and Gemini exactly as written, and save the full answers.
Estimated time
30 minutes
How to check
Check whether your brand appears in the answer and your domain appears in the sources.
2 We know which brands appear in those answers instead of ours.
Why it matters

If you do not know which brands appear instead of yours, or their sources, it is hard to decide what to change.

To do
Write down every brand in those answers and every cited source URL, then count how many times each brand appears.
Estimated time
1 hour
How to check
The top 3 brand names and the URLs of the pages cited for them.

02 Bot access and publishing on your own site

3 We have checked whether AI search bots can access our site.
Why it matters

If search bots cannot crawl your site, your published articles will not be cited as sources in AI answers.

To do
Check that robots.txt does not block OAI-SearchBot (ChatGPT search) or Googlebot (Google AI Overviews and AI Mode). If you block Google-Extended, the Gemini app cannot fetch your pages as grounding for its answers. GPTBot collects training data, so blocking it does not affect visibility in ChatGPT search.
Estimated time
20 minutes
How to check
Open your-domain/robots.txt and review its Disallow rules.
4 We publish content on a domain our brand owns.
Why it matters

If you publish only on third-party platforms, you do not own the traffic or records, even when your content is cited.

To do
Create article pages under your brand domain. Either a subdirectory or a subdomain works.
Estimated time
1 to 2 weeks
How to check
Check that articles open on your domain and are included in the sitemap.

03 Customer questions and repeated measurement

5 We have a list of questions customers ask before buying.
Why it matters

Without a question list, article topics end up being chosen by guesswork rather than from questions received in sales and consultations.

To do
Leave out questions you only guessed at, and collect 20 questions you have actually received in sales and consultations.
Estimated time
Half a day
How to check
A table showing whether your website has a page for each question.
6 We repeat the same questions regularly and record the answers.
Why it matters

One set of answers cannot show whether the brands mentioned have changed.

To do
Use a fixed question list. Ask the questions on the same day each week, using the same method, and record the answers.
Estimated time
1 hour per week
How to check
Your brand's appearance rate after 4 weeks of records.

04 Tracking AI referrals

7 We identify visits from AI answers separately in GA4.
Why it matters

Visits that came through AI get mixed into direct or organic traffic, so AI referrals cannot be counted on their own.

To do
In GA4, create a referring-domain segment that includes chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai and gemini.google.com. GA4 does not distinguish visits from Google AI Overviews and AI Mode from regular Google Search.
Estimated time
1 hour
How to check
Check that the segment captures sessions, then review the last 30 days.
8 We track whether visits from AI answers lead to inquiries or purchases.
Why it matters

Counting visits alone does not show how much this work contributes to inquiries or purchases.

To do
Set up form submissions and purchases as conversion events, then report on them within the AI referral segment.
Estimated time
Half a day
How to check
Conversions and conversion rate for sessions that came through AI.

This is a self-check score. Whether your brand actually appears in AI answers can only be known by asking the same questions repeatedly and measuring.

7 result types
Start with the bot access check
There is no record yet of checking whether AI search bots can access your site. This check is the first item in the to-do list below.
Several items are still unknown
Start by checking the current state of the items you marked Not sure. Each card below shows the expected time and how to check it.
There is no starting-point record
You are already running content or measurement, but you have not saved the AI answers from your starting point. If you save the full answers now, you can compare them with the next measurement.
Some items are still open
The to-do items below are the open items, earliest step first. Recording the same questions the same way for 4 weeks lets you compare whether the brands in the answers changed.
Not yet counting whether it leads to inquiries
You have a question list and repeated records, but no way to count whether the results lead to inquiries or purchases.
Your GEO work is up and running
All four areas are largely in place. What remains is setting a measurement schedule and counting how many more times you appear in answers than competitor brands.
Many items are still open
Start with to-do item 1 below. Each card shows the expected time and how to check it.
