Free AI visibility audit reports from GEO agencies: What to check before requesting one

· PION

When PION asked ChatGPT and Gemini 44 times where to get a free AI visibility audit report, 95% of the sources were tool or agency websites. The most frequently recommended option was a self-service tool that scores a URL. This article explains how scoring tools differ from reports based on actual prompt testing and what a report should contain.

Ask AI, "Where can I get a free AI visibility audit report?" and it lists tools that generate a score when you enter a website URL. The score arrives immediately, but the explanation does not establish how it relates to whether your brand appears in actual ChatGPT answers.

PION submitted this question to ChatGPT and Gemini 44 times over one month, starting in late June 2026. Of the 322 sources ChatGPT cited, 95.0% were tools' or agencies' own websites. The most frequently recommended option was a self-service tool that scores a URL, appearing in 17 of the 44 responses. Another tool of the same type came next, followed by a page introducing an SEO tool vendor's AI features.

Free audits take two forms: tools that read a page and assign a score, and reports that submit category questions to AI and measure whether the brand is mentioned or cited in actual answers. This article covers the information either type of report needs to help you decide what to do next.

1. Most free audits recommended by AI are URL scoring tools

The search phrases AI uses for this question lead it to English-language tools. ChatGPT supplemented searches for the original prompt with English queries such as "AI visibility audit free tool" and "GEO audit free." As a result, self-service tools from outside Korea filled the citation list. Korean domains accounted for just 3.1% of ChatGPT citations, compared with 22.6% for Gemini.

Metric ChatGPT Gemini
Responses (responses with sources) 28 (28) 16 (16)
Cited URLs 322 124
Citations per response 11.5 7.8
Unique domains 114 46
Domains cited only once 64 25
Share of tools' and agencies' own websites 95.0% 94.4%
Most cited domain Self-service audit tool: 21 citations (6.5%) SEO tool vendor: 10 citations (8.1%)

Gemini also cited free audit request pages operated by Korean agencies. While ChatGPT provided a list of tools, Gemini included companies that send a report after you apply. Even with the same question, the type of audit you receive therefore depends on the engine.

2. What self-service scoring tools can and cannot tell you

Scoring tools are sufficient for checking page structure. Reading a page can establish whether its title is a question, whether it has an FAQ section and schema markup, and whether robots.txt allows AI crawlers. Your team can fix these items directly, so a scoring tool's results alone can provide an initial task list.

Scoring tools cannot answer two questions: whether your brand is named in actual AI answers, and who is cited instead when it is absent. Reading the page cannot establish either; you need to submit category questions to the engine. If an audit report does not answer these questions, your score may improve while your visibility in answers stays the same.

Check the scoring criteria too. Some tools deduct points for the absence of llms.txt or AI-specific files. In its documentation on AI features, Google states that appearing in AI Overviews and AI Mode does not require new machine-readable files or special schema. Some criteria on which a tool gives you a low score may have no bearing on actual visibility, so compare the reasons for deductions with supporting documentation.

3. What a useful audit report should contain

A report's value depends more on whether you can repeat the measurements than on the size of its score. If the following items are documented, you can use the same method three months later to calculate the improvement.

Item Format Problem if missing
Prompt list Category, comparison and problem-solving questions without brand names You cannot tell which questions were measured
Engines and measurement counts n runs per engine You cannot distinguish the results from a single query
Mention and citation rates By prompt, based on the answer body A single score hides the causes
Sources cited instead List of domains and URLs You cannot decide which page to create next
Competitor set List of brands named in answers to the same questions You cannot compare share of visibility
Raw data Full responses and cited URLs in JSON or a table You cannot verify the report's figures

If the prompt list contains only questions that include your brand name, the report will look favorable. When you supply a brand name, it is natural for AI to name that brand in its answer. Useful audit questions ask about a category without naming a brand, such as "Recommend a vegan sunscreen suitable for sensitive skin." Prompt design criteria are covered in 5 Checks for Auditing Your Brand's AI Visibility.

4. Why the number of measurements determines a report's reliability

AI generates a new answer with every call. Across ChatGPT's answers to this question, 114 unique domains were cited, and 64 appeared only once. If your brand appears when you ask once, it may be absent on the next call, and the reverse is also possible.

Report figures therefore need to include the number of measurements. A "20% ChatGPT mention rate" means something different depending on whether it represents 1 of 5 runs or 10 of 50. For this reason, PION measures a single prompt more than 40 times over a month. A score produced without repeated measurements cannot serve as a baseline.

5. What PION's free audit checks

PION's free audit begins with a consultation request. We identify questions customers are likely to ask in your brand's category, then use PIONsight to measure actual ChatGPT, Gemini and AI Overviews answers. This identifies the questions in which your brand is absent and the sources cited instead. The results show whether your brand appears for each question and list the cited sources, rather than providing a score.

After the audit, there are two options. If your team will handle implementation, a four-week consulting engagement provides prompt design and a prioritized roadmap. If you also want to delegate publishing, you can move to an agency service. The differences are explained in Choosing a GEO Agency: Criteria to Compare Before Hiring a Consultant. You can submit a request through the free GEO audit request option at getpion.com.

6. What to prepare before requesting a free audit

A list of candidate questions and competitors makes the audit faster. Preparing the following in advance lets you establish the measurement scope during the first consultation.

  • 10 to 20 candidate questions that customers actually ask. Category, comparison and problem-solving questions are more useful than questions containing a brand name.
  • A list of competitors to compare. Use this list to check which brands AI names instead of yours.
  • The status of your site's robots.txt. If it blocks AI crawlers, you need to remove those blocks first, regardless of the audit results.
  • A list of content published within the past six months. During the audit, we also check which pages are candidates for citation.

For guidance on what to address first after receiving the results, see the breakdown by cause in 5 Reasons Your Brand Does Not Appear in ChatGPT or Gemini.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I get a free AI visibility audit report?

Free options are available in two forms: self-service tools that score a URL, and reports that submit brand-category questions to AI to check mentions and citations in actual answers. When PION submitted this question to ChatGPT and Gemini 44 times, 95% of the sources were tool or agency websites, and scoring tools were recommended most often. PION's free audit begins with a consultation request. We use PIONsight to measure actual ChatGPT, Gemini and AI Overviews answers, identifying questions in which the brand is absent and sources cited instead.

Is a free tool that scores a URL sufficient?

It can check page structure. Title format, the presence of an FAQ, schema markup and crawler permissions can be assessed by reading the page. To learn whether your brand appears in actual AI answers and which sources are cited instead of competitors, you need to submit questions. A scoring tool cannot establish this.

What does an audit report need to be useful?

It needs the prompts used for measurement, the engines and number of measurements, mention and citation rates by prompt, a list of sources cited instead of your brand, a competitor set, and the raw response data. Without these items, you cannot verify the report's score through repeat measurement or determine which pages to create next.

Can I trust a result measured only once?

One measurement is insufficient. Across ChatGPT's answers to the same question, 114 unique domains were cited, and 64 appeared only once. Because AI generates a new answer with each call, you need to measure the same prompt multiple times and use the average as a baseline.

What should I prepare before requesting a free audit?

Preparing candidate questions that customers are likely to ask in your brand's category, a list of competitors to compare, and the status of your site's robots.txt will make the audit faster. Category, comparison and problem-solving questions are more useful for the audit than questions containing a brand name.
