Choosing an AEO or GEO marketing agency: What to check and which sources AI cites

· PION

Understand what AEO and GEO agencies do, which sources AI cites when recommending agencies, and what evidence, questions, and traffic data to check in a proposal.

Search for AEO marketing, GEO marketing, or AEO GEO marketing and you get a mix of agency names and definition articles. These pages do not explain in one place whether AEO and GEO involve the same work, what an agency does, and how to choose one.

PION repeatedly enters agency-recommendation questions into ChatGPT and Gemini in the same way, then tallies the sources cited in the answers by domain. This shows which kinds of pages AI cites. The sections below focus on agencies' work and the checks to make when choosing one.

1. Do AEO and GEO marketing involve the same work?

In most cases they are the same work called by different names, and PION runs the two as a single operation. AEO stands for answer engine optimization: getting a brand cited in answers from ChatGPT or Google's AI Overviews. GEO is generative engine optimization, a broader term that extends to how a brand is explained in the body of an answer and on what grounds. Some agencies lead with AEO and others with GEO, but open the proposal and it contains the same sequence. The meaning of the terms and the difference from SEO are laid out in What Are AEO and GEO? Marketing in an Era Where Search Turns into 'Answers'.

The 'AEO certified companies,' 'AEO authorized companies,' and 'AEO company lookup' that also show up in searches refer to the Korea Customs Service's Authorized Economic Operator program for import-export safety management. The spelling is the same, but it has nothing to do with marketing's AEO.

2. What an AEO/GEO marketing agency does

The work follows four stages: selecting questions, measuring answers, publishing pages, and tracking traffic. One PION team handles them in sequence. Each stage has a deliverable the brand should receive.

Stage What the agency does What the brand receives
Question selection From consultation and inquiry records, communities, and search volume, select the questions that come up when someone is considering a purchase A question list and the rationale for the selection
Answer measurement Ask the same questions again to ChatGPT, Gemini, and Google's AI Overviews on a set cycle and preserve the original answer text Appearance rate, cited sources, competitor brand positions
Page publishing Create pages on the brand domain for AI to cite, and fix the main site so search bots can read it well A publishing list and index status
Traffic tracking Count visits and inquiries that came in via AI using GA4 and Search Console Number of AI-referred visits, number of inquiries

If any one of these is missing from the proposal, the brand has to do that work itself. Publishing without measurement cannot tell you what changed, and without traffic tracking, having your name appear in an AI answer does not connect to revenue.

3. Which sources does AI cite when recommending agencies?

You should check the types of domains in the source list rather than the agency names that appear in the body of the answer, and PION repeats and preserves this tally for each agency-recommendation question. The way to check is simple.

Item Approach
Questions Several agency-recommendation questions (recommend a GEO agency, which AEO/GEO consultancy to choose, a place that gets our company to appear in AI answers)
Input The same question multiple times on different dates, to ChatGPT and Gemini each
Record Original answer text, source URLs, source domains
Classification Community posts, agency directories, academic papers, press, agencies' own sites

To do it yourself, enter one question multiple times over several days and count the source domains. That reveals whether AI cites the agency's official pages or third-party articles first. If a certain agency appears often in the answers, it means there are many third-party articles covering that agency, and whether those articles exist because of real capability or because of visibility campaigns cannot be distinguished from the answers alone.

4. What to check before hiring an AEO/GEO agency or consultant

Look in the proposal for three items: the original AI response text, the source of the question set, and traffic tracking. Every agency provides a similar case list. These three items can be checked for presence or absence.

Do they provide the original AI response text? Instead of a single screenshot, you should receive the original answer text and cited URLs for each round. AI answers change each time, even for the same question. A screenshot from one moment cannot show how the answers have changed. PION preserves the full answer text and source list for every round and discloses them as they are.

Where do they get the question set? If you start with a generic question list the agency brought in, it will diverge from what your customers actually ask. Check whether the questions were chosen from consultation and inquiry records, communities, and search terms with search volume, and whether they are finalized together with the brand.

Do they count traffic too? Your name appearing in an AI answer and a customer coming in are different events. Check whether they count visits from AI sources such as chatgpt.com and gemini.google.com separately in GA4, and report whether those visits lead to inquiries.

AEO/GEO consulting covers question selection, measurement, and site review. The brand handles publishing. If you have someone in-house to write the articles, consulting is enough; if not, choose a GEO AEO agency that also handles publishing. The items to put in the contract are laid out as five points in GEO Agency Recommendations: Why AI Answers Change Every Time and How to Choose, and the boundary between consulting and full-service agency work is in Which GEO Agency Is Good? Criteria to Compare Before Commissioning Consulting.

PION's AEO marketing and GEO marketing setup and contract structures are laid out in the GEO Agency Service Overview. Before looking into agencies, check your brand's position with the eight items in the 5-Minute GEO Readiness Assessment.

Frequently asked questions

What should I check when choosing an AEO marketing agency?

Check whether they provide the original AI response text, where they get the question set, and whether they count traffic too. The criteria are whether they provide the original AI answer text and cited URLs per round, whether they select questions from consultation and inquiry records and search volume, and whether they separately tally AI-referred visits in GA4. PION repeatedly enters agency-recommendation questions into ChatGPT and Gemini and tallies cited sources by domain, and uses the checks above to assess agencies.

What is the AEO GEO marketing method?

It is four stages: selecting the questions customers ask when considering a purchase, measuring what AI currently answers to those questions, publishing pages on the brand domain for AI to cite, and tallying in GA4 the visits and inquiries that came in via AI. PION runs this sequence as a single operation and, at each stage, delivers the question list, original answer text, publishing list, and traffic count to the brand.

Are AEO marketing and GEO marketing different services?

In most cases they are the same work called by different names. AEO is the work of getting a brand cited in AI answers, and GEO is a broader term that extends to how the brand is explained in the body of the answer. The practical sequence is the same: question selection, answer measurement, page publishing, and traffic tracking.

What is the relationship with 'AEO certified companies' and 'AEO authorized companies'?

There is none. 'AEO certified companies' and 'AEO authorized companies' refer to the Korea Customs Service's Authorized Economic Operator program for import-export safety management, and 'AEO company lookup' or 'AEO company list' searches are also mostly people looking for that program's list of authorized companies. Marketing's AEO is an abbreviation for answer engine optimization, and only the spelling is the same.

What is the difference between AEO GEO consulting and full-service agency work?

Consulting covers question selection, measurement, and site review, but the brand publishes on its own. A full-service agency also handles publishing and traffic tracking. If you have someone in-house to write the articles, consulting is enough; if not, choose a full-service agency.
