GEO services for hospitals and clinics: Working within medical advertising rules

· PION

Hospitals and clinics can use GEO services even when treatment testimonials cannot be used. This guide covers medical content that AI can cite and the media subject to prior advertising review in Korea.

When hospitals inquire about GEO agency services, the first question is usually the same: if they can't write reviews, how are they supposed to get into AI answers?

It is possible, but the content you can use differs from that for general consumer products. Article 56 of the Korean Medical Service Act prohibits advertising that risks creating a mistaken impression about treatment effects, such as patient treatment testimonials, so reviews and before-and-after comparisons cannot be used to earn citations. You can use verifiable facts about procedures, criteria, and costs. These are also the kinds of facts AI generally includes in its answers.

This article covers content operations and is not legal advice. Have individual wording checked by the relevant review body and through your hospital's internal review.

1. Which media require prior review

The procedure differs depending on the medium. A website that a hospital runs on a domain it purchased directly is exempt from prior review of medical advertising, while external platforms with large user bases are subject to it.

Medium Prior review Notes
Own-domain website & blog Not subject Article 56 prohibitions of the Korean Medical Service Act still apply
Internet media with 100,000+ average daily users Subject Counted over the preceding 3 months as of the end of the previous year
Newspapers, internet newspapers & periodicals Subject When running contributed articles or advertisements
Banners, posters, flyers & transit facility ads Subject Applicable items among outdoor advertisements

An exemption removes the prior-review step. The same content prohibitions still apply. You can check the criteria by medium in the Korean Medical Association Medical Advertising Review Committee's guide to review subjects.

From a GEO perspective, this distinction matters because of publishing speed. Content on your own domain can go live after internal review. Content for large platforms must also allow for the advertising review schedule. If you need to change your citation rate within the first three months, prioritizing your own domain makes the schedule easier to manage.

2. What to write instead of reviews

AI tends to excerpt verifiable facts rather than personal impressions. These types of medical content fit that pattern.

  • Procedure and examination steps: Guide readers step by step through preparation, duration, and what happens on the day
  • Typical recovery times: State the usual duration and explain that it varies by individual
  • Cost structure: List items not covered by insurance and explain how each cost is calculated
  • Equipment and certification information: Include approval numbers, introduction dates, and conditions of use
  • Medical staff's areas of expertise: State their subspecialties, academic society activities, and scope of practice

In all five types, the subject of the sentence is the hospital. "The patient was satisfied" is a testimonial, but "The recovery period for this procedure varies by individual and is typically N to N days" is a procedural explanation. When discussing the same information, describing it from the hospital's perspective produces citable paragraphs that avoid prohibited content.

In every medium, exclude claims of definite effects, superiority comparisons with other medical institutions, and misleading before-and-after photos.

3. How to build the question list

Healthcare needs a different approach from other industries, starting with prompt design. For questions that name a diagnosis directly, AI often avoids answering or falls back on generalities like "we recommend consulting a specialist," so there's no place for a hospital name to appear at all.

Questions about procedures and conditions can be used for measurement.

Questions unsuitable for measurement Questions suitable for measurement
What disease do these symptoms indicate? How do I prepare for this examination?
Which hospital is the best? Places offering night-time care in [location] + [department]
Is this procedure effective? What items make up the cost of this procedure?

The questions on the left leave almost no room for a brand in the answer. Those on the right allow factual documents to be cited. Use a fixed set of prompts like those on the right, measure the baseline citation rate, and publish one page for each question. The reason for pairing each prompt with one page is explained in the Content Structure Design Guide for Increasing AI Search Citations.

4. Set the review process first

In hospital GEO agency work, schedules usually slip at the review stage. The agency cannot verify medical facts for the hospital. Medical staff need time for review alongside their clinical schedules.

Before signing a contract, settle three things.

  • Who reviews: Designate, in writing, the person in charge for each department and the final approver
  • Review schedule: If your goal is publishing once a week, you also need a fixed weekly review slot
  • Advertising review: If you have content going on large platforms, arrange in advance who files the review application and the expected turnaround

If you start without settling these, drafts just pile up and nothing gets published. Because the citation rate responds only to published pages, a review bottleneck translates directly into delayed results.

5. When to assess results

At least three months. The first one to two months are spent establishing the baseline citation rate and a reliable review and publishing schedule, and it typically takes 4 to 12 weeks for a published page to be reflected in AI answers.

Assessment covers more than how often the hospital's name appears. We also check the citation rate on location and department questions, actual inquiries that came in via AI referrers, and whether the hospital's information is cited accurately. There are cases where AI names the hospital correctly but misstates its treatment offerings or location, so we include information accuracy as a checkpoint separate from exposure frequency.

For regulated industries, PION includes the review process in the contract scope. You can review the diagnosis, publishing, and measurement setup in our GEO Agency Service overview.

Frequently asked questions

Can hospitals or clinics use GEO agency services too?

Yes, but the content you can use differs from that for other industries. The Korean Medical Service Act prohibits advertising that risks creating a mistaken impression about treatment effects, such as patient treatment testimonials, so the approach of gathering reviews to build AI citations can't be used. Instead, you build citations with fact-based documents such as explanations of disease and procedure steps, equipment and certification information, cost item breakdowns, and medical staff's areas of expertise. A website that a hospital runs on a domain it purchased directly is excluded from prior review, so focusing on your own site makes scheduling easier.

Which media are subject to prior review of medical advertising?

These include newspapers, internet newspapers, and periodicals; certain outdoor advertisements such as banners, posters, and flyers; and internet media with a daily average of 100,000 or more users over the preceding three months as of the end of the previous year. A hospital's own-domain website that it runs directly is excluded, but content posted to large-platform blogs or video channels must undergo review. For individual cases, please check the criteria of the relevant review body.

If you can't use patient reviews, isn't it hard to get cited in AI answers?

You can earn citations without reviews. AI can readily use paragraphs with procedures, criteria, and figures, rather than personal impressions. Verifiable facts, such as preparation steps, typical recovery periods, cost breakdowns, and equipment certification numbers, are easy to excerpt.

What must the hospital handle itself when working with a GEO agency?

The hospital must verify medical facts and approve content before publication. Sentences that haven't gone through review by the medical staff in charge of the department carry significant risk. For media that require advertising review, the hospital also submits the application and incorporates the review findings. Its review schedule therefore determines the publishing schedule.

Do hospitals also measure results by citation rate?

We measure it the same way. After fixing prompts that combine a location name with a department, we record the rate at which the hospital's name appears in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Claude answers. For some healthcare questions, AI avoids answering or gives general advice. To measure visibility, design prompts around procedures, costs, and preparation rather than diagnosis names.
