What does a ChatGPT marketing agency do?

· PION

ChatGPT marketing agencies may run ads or help brands appear in AI answers. Learn how these services and their measurement methods differ, and what to check in a proposal.

When you gather candidates by searching for "ChatGPT marketing agency," you find different types of companies in one list. Ad agencies and content companies use the same keyword.

The term covers two different jobs. One is buying ad space to gain exposure; the other is designing and publishing content so that a brand gets cited within the body of an answer. The skills required differ, and so does the way you verify results. Once you decide which one you need, the candidate list is cut in half.

1. How the two services differ

The biggest difference is whether you buy a spot or create one.

Category Running ads Answer visibility
Exposure location Ad space Answer body and source list
How it is secured Buying ad placements Publishing content and accumulating external mentions
Time to take effect As soon as the campaign runs Typically 4-12 weeks
Verifying results Ad account reports Directly measuring the brand citation rate per prompt
When stopped Exposure ends immediately Published material remains and citations continue

Increasing ad spend does not raise how often a brand is named inside answers. A page that has started earning citations, however, remains in place after you stop spending. Combining the budgets and metrics makes it impossible to tell which service produced the results.

2. How to build visibility in AI answers

When AI generates an answer, it references multiple documents and cites some of them as sources. For a brand to be included, there must be a document the AI can use as a source.

The work covers two areas.

  • Owned content: We create a fixed prompt list from questions people ask, assign each question to a page, and publish pages that answer directly in the first paragraph
  • External channels: We accumulate brand mentions on communities, media outlets, and Q&A platforms

External channels matter because of the sources AI uses. When PION ran recommendation-type questions 300 times in June and July 2026, overseas community posts were the most frequent source among the 3,148 cited URLs. Companies' official sites generally accounted for 1-2%. Publishing only on your own site covers just some of the sources AI cites.

3. Why the same question produces different company names

AI answers have no fixed top ranks. In that same 300-run measurement, 648 unique company names were mentioned, and even the most frequently appearing one showed up in 35 of 300 runs, or 11.7%. On average, 7.8 companies were mentioned together per answer.

Evaluate results using the average brand citation rate over a set period rather than a single response. A single screenshot offers little evidence.

That is why the contract should specify the prompts and number of measurement runs. For questions to ask when assessing an agency, see the table in GEO agency recommendations: why AI answers change every time and how to choose.

4. Four things to check in a proposal

The services described in proposals overlap, making their scope hard to distinguish. These four questions clarify what is included.

Question What it verifies
Which engines do you measure, and how many times? The sample size of the performance report
Do you finalize the measurement prompts at the time of contract? Room to pick favorable questions after the fact
Is content creation and publishing included in the scope? Whether execution is left to the advertiser
Who owns the published material and measurement data? Whether assets remain after the contract ends

Ask for evidence behind any guarantee of visibility on a specific AI service. During our measurements, AI itself sometimes warned against companies making this claim.

5. How to sequence ads and answer visibility

With enough budget, you can run both services, starting with answer visibility. It takes 4-12 weeks to take effect, so a later start delays the point at which you can assess results. Ads appear as soon as the campaign runs, so adding them later has little impact on the schedule.

Separate the measurement from the start. If you do not distinguish ad traffic from AI-answer traffic in GA4, three months later you will not be able to trace back which one generated the inquiries.

PION handles answer visibility. We establish a baseline across four engines, then create and publish content. Paid advertising management is outside our scope. Our operating method is described in the GEO agency service guide.

Frequently asked questions

Can you recommend a ChatGPT marketing agency?

Decide which service you need to narrow down the candidates. The term ChatGPT marketing agency covers two kinds of work: buying ad space to gain exposure, and designing and publishing content so that a brand gets cited within the body of an answer. Ad management requires skill in running ad accounts. Answer visibility requires content production and citation measurement, so you need to assess different capabilities. PION handles answer visibility, creating and publishing content based on measurements across four engines: ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Claude.

If I run ChatGPT ads, will the brand also appear in the answers?

They are separate. Ads appear in designated advertising placements, whereas being cited in the body of an answer is the result of AI's process of selecting reference documents. Increasing ad spend does not directly increase how often a brand is named in answers. You should set the budgets and performance metrics of the two jobs separately.

How do you build visibility in AI answers?

We create a fixed prompt list from questions people ask, assign each question to a page, and publish pages that answer directly in the first paragraph. We also increase brand mentions on external channels such as communities and media outlets. This is because the sources AI references contain more third-party documents than your own site.

Which metrics measure results?

For ads, you look up impressions, clicks, and conversions in the ad account. For answer visibility, you must directly measure the brand citation rate per prompt, and you also track traffic from AI-service domains separately in GA4. The brand citation rate does not appear in the ad account, so check that the agency documents its measurement prompts and number of runs.

What should I check in an agency's proposal?

There are four: whether they agree on the measurement engines and prompt list in advance, whether they give baseline figures as numbers, whether they include content publishing, and whether ownership of the published material and measurement data belongs to the advertiser. Ask for evidence behind any guarantee of visibility on a specific AI service. AI answers produce different results even for the same question, so it is hard to promise exposure at a single point in time.
